Drew, Mississippi is a small rural town located among the most fertile lands in the United States. Painful chapters of American history have been written here. But, the story of Drew is not finished.
Today, Drew and the surrounding area is among the most persistently impoverished places in rural America. But that’s no accident. Over 150 years after the Civil War, the historical inequities of the past map almost seamlessly onto the present. The legacies of slavery and racialized apartheid live on here. But – in the face of continued structural exclusion – imagination and determination also live.
“We talked about what we don't have. So now, what is it that we really want to have?”
–Gloria Dickerson, Founder, We2gether
Meeting these generational challenges requires the imagination and action of many. That's why We2Gether and HOPE (Hope Enterprise Corporation, Hope Credit Union, Hope Policy Institute) are working with city leaders to help fill those gaps left by insufficient government funding and harmful public policy.
